It has been a time of both joy and sorrow. Certainly some of the situations are even worse than I expected, but there have been compensating and even surprising pleasures. Namwianga Mission is even in greater difficulty than I expected, and my friends there are suffering. On the other hand, things are developing very well in our community schools. We enjoyed great experiences in those schools and are encouraged that education is being made available to more and more children. It was especially rewarding to see how some communities are uniting to promote development. Community headmen and other leaders are organising the people and planning construction projects and other improvements. The people are willingly assembling construction materials and preparing bricks so work can go on. It was delightful to celebrate this progress with them. There was much singing and dancing, especially by the women.
Other highlights included The Haven--an orphanage developed by Steve & Joan and now operated by Thomas & Cecilia. What a delight it was to see how wonderfully it is progressing under their management! The place is clean and neat. The yard is both functional and decorative. This represents the cutting edge of our response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The tiny victims are struggling for life under Cecilia's dedicated and effective care. Zambians are endlessly grateful. They give tremendous appreciation for the stuff we do there for them. As we enjoyed their celebration at Zyangale, my
friend asked me, "Bill, what are you doing in Canada?!
It is true that there is much to do, and the generous thanksgiving of the Zambians make doing it very rewarding, but the question for me is always becoming, "Is it worthwhile?" As I have told many people, the fundamental learning I've done in Zambia is that it is incredibly difficult to help people. There are so many things that we can do, and that we can afford to do for them. But should we? How can we be truly helpful? I have witnessed that many of our interactions in Zambia (likely in many parts of the third world) over the years have not been helpful. Instead we have created dependancy, and we have been guilty of economic enslavement. I am constantly in a personal struggle over whether what I'm doing is worthwhile; I have no doubt that it is rewarding!
Bill Ulrich

Celebration at Katungu

The team experienced the rare privilege of a Zambian celebration today. The occasion was the unveiling of the plaque for Katungu Christian Community School. We were also presenting a large supply of textbooks and other school materials for their use. As the ceremony proceeded they began with ululation, soon followed by outbursts of song and then dancing. Apparently this tradition developed during a previous educational mission to Zambia, and has now become a part of irrefutable culture. It must be said that the food was fine, and that all were well fed, however what I learned and what is illustrated by the photos of the breakfast preparation is that apparently breakfast can be delivered by guys, providing they have appropriate and plentiful assistance and instruction!
Today, the program happened again. This time, it was demonstrated that the guys are a quick study, as they were capable of providing a fine repast (the bun-toast was a bit of a downer) without undue outside aid.
Bill Ulrich

Shoes for Students

Today is foot washing day at Simakakata. Words cannot describe the experience. I will send a picture and you can get a glimpse, but I don’t know the words to explain the accompanying feelings of this participant. On Wednesday, after a full day’s work, one of the teachers hand pumped the water and filled a 40 gallon barrel half full. (I had a turn on the hand pump on Tuesday and tired out after 20 minutes that produced 3 gallons of water). The young adults teach the children the story of Jesus washing the disciple’s feet. The students form 4 lines in an almost orderly fashion and we wash approximately 250 children’s feet. The team members are paired up – one washer and one dryer. Several people work behind the basins trying to match shoe size to foot size; it takes a keen eye. When the feet are washed -- not clean, but cleaner than before -- we offer each child a pair of shoes. It is obvious that some of the younger children have never had shoes on their feet. They stand up and lift their heavy feet deliberately in a high step prance until they adjust to the new feeling. I see a group of four 4th grade boys standing in a circle, almost toe to toe, comparing their new shoes. Such a simple thing commends a blessing to the giver and the receiver.
Marti Elford

Simakakata

While part of the crew was at Namwianga Basic, the remainder of the crew worked at Simakakata Christian Community School. We matched up with teachers who wished to try some of the techniques we had presented in our workshop last Saturday. The grade nine teachers begged off beginning on Wednesday as the were supervising practice exams. As it developed, this was not necessary, but perhaps reflective of a lack of effort by some of them. In any case, we were able to engage in some productive arrangements, so we hope some benefit will accrue.

We were universally alarmed at the state of affairs for the boarding students. At present fifty-three girls are living in a room 11 by 6 metres. Some are sleeping three to a bunk. I am trying to encourage some improvements there by asking them to consider converting the old Home Economics block (25 by 7 metres) into a girls dorm and building a new Home Economics block. The deputy-head is enthusiastic about this (the head was away this week), so I've taken the idea to the Education Secretary. He will try to obtain a drawing for such a development so we may know the costs involved. Then we may jointly consider where funds may be found. Conditions are likewise poor for the boys, but no solution has readily come to mind.
Bill Ulrich

Workshops

Workshops were designed to allow the collaboration of our team with our Zambian colleagues in many local schools. Much time has been spent taking care of shopping and other preparations for our time at Namwianga that begins tomorrow. The irregular arrival of team members has necessitated many trips to the airport, and the even more irregular arrival of luggage has caused a few additional trips. Three of the our four bags arrived this afternoon having spent an additional holiday in Athens without us. Wade and Richelle are still waiting for one more bag that we hope will arrive before we leave in the morning. Team building exercises raised much laughter and consciousness. We have enjoyed these days to relax, soak in some Zambian scenery and wildlife and catch up on time zones. Now, we are looking forward to working with this group over the next weeks. We are determined to display maximum flexibility as we look forward to working with and learning from each other, and our new Zambian friends‹as yet unmet. Of course John and Shepherd are here and have contributed a great deal to the success of our activities these first few days.
Bill Ulrich

It's Getting Soon!

One week from today we will be winging our way to Zambia. Be assured that it will change your life. We will be easily able to leave Zambia, but getting Zambia to leave us may be impossible. We have five options so this means that everyone can't do everything. I will describe the options below and then,
I need YOU to RESPOND and tell me what your favourite, most important, MUST DO!, #1 option is so that I can schedule you for that activity on one of the days. I will just assign people for the other two days according to where we need bodies. But at least you will get to do your #1 favourite option while we are there.

Thank-you for your prompt response! I will sign off here but please take time to read the options are below....sorry this is so long.

I look forward to the service, blessings and friendships that await us this summer in Zambia. Love Tamara

PS you didn't think I'd forget to update you on how many more sleeps did you?! -- ONLY 46 MORE FOR ME!!

You will get to do 3 of the following 5 options:
(#1) Nurses Outreach- This activity includes heading out to a rural community with the Namwianga nurses, Tebia, Fortune or Stella for the monthly Under Five Clinic. Your tasks would include lifting babies into the sling to be weighed while enduring their frightened cries from your white skin. And helping the nurses to chart their weight on the health cards. The nurses will adminster Vaccinations to the appropriate children. At the end, all the underweight babies will be given portion of High Energy Protein Supplement to help them improve.
A true taste of rural nursing in an undeveloped country!

(#2) Visiting Wasawange- This activity will include meeting up with a local friend and then just going from home to home greeting, introducing yourself, visiting, playing with the children...or just whatever you make it! This was a favourite pastime of mine, and I found that I gained much insight into the Zambian culture from these visits....as well as many more friends in the community. As you will see this summer, Wasawange is a "reserve" piece of land where only service workers from the mission live. (ie: the cooks, the cleaners, the drivers, the farm hands, etc.) They are poorer than the folks that live/work at the mission and are teachers, or nurses. The people of Wasawange will greatly appreciate your time and visit, they will be gracious hosts as they lead you from home to home, teach you the proper greetings and have an entire conversation in 1/2 Tonga and 1/2 English...try it, its lots of fun! You could bring along little crayons or hair ties to give to the kids....because rest assured, they will follow you like ducklings.
A true taste of village life in rural Zambia!

(#3) Orphan Headed Homes- This activity includes spending time with the children in the Orphan headed homes that receive some support from ZMF-C. We will have already spent sometime with these kids in the previous 2 weeks and will have a better idea of what their needs are. This day could be an opportunity to help with with things like: planting a garden, washing some clothes, preparing some food, playing football, dolls, the stone game "Insolo"....you certainly won't be bored! These children are all alone in the world and this time will be special relationship building time. Although material gifts are encouraged and needed, your time and friendship are equally important to their development.
A true taste of the plight and obstacles AIDS orphans face daily.

(#4) Orphages- This activity includes spending time working at The Haven or Seven Fountains Farm Orphanage. Thomas and Cecilia Siafwyo, are a Zambian couple that run the Haven and Rod and Sue, a South African couple run Seven Fountains - I know that both families would appreciate any time and effort offered while we are there! I will ask them to think of specific activities that you could help with during this time. Generally speaking though, your tasks would be: washing dishes, bathing/changing babies, feeding porridge or bottles, helping older kids with brushing teeth/changing their clothes, playing, reading, bandaging, hugging, listening, smiling, laughing, tying laces and just...being there! I promise there will be no shortage of activity!
A true taste of orphan care opportunites on the Mission field...
and the daily tasks of raising 15-20 children!

(#5) HIV/AIDS Patients- This activity involves spending time with ZMF-C's Sponsored HIV/AIDS patients. You will gain insight into the struggles of their disease and economic position. The focus will be to encourage them in all of this and offer friendship in Christ...and it will bless you as much as the patient. We can read the AIDS stats, watch the news, and even sympathize but...this is what is all about - people. You will walk away from this activity changed for life and possibly even moved to shake things up back at home and be a voice for those who voiceless in this world!
This will truly bring life-breath to startling realities.

Okay....let me know which one its gonna be! But remember, you will get to do 3 in total.

Dig It...

Check this site out everyone:
http://www.invisiblechildren.com/home.php

I saw these guys on Oprah last week and I am just so proud of all that they've accomplished! Don't worry about the heading that says Saskatchewan Team Members, just add your picture to the list.

Time to Start Praying

On the weekend everyone picked a name of a person on our team out of a hat, that they are committing to pray for daily from now until the end of our trip. Today I have assigned all other members who weren't at the meeting a person to pray for. So, this is a reminder that it is now time to start praying. Everyday, from now until the trip is over for the person that you picked or have been assigned to. As we discussed on the weekend, do it anonymously without the person knowing, or if you feel comfortable with it, contact them to see if there is anything in particular that they would like you to pray for. This is a mission that we can not keep God out of, so lets get on our knees and start praying. In the next little while I am also going to post, specific areas that we can pray for as a team (such as teacher workshop, VBS, specific schools, etc.) When posted I would ask all members of our team to pray specifically for that area.

Ed Slywka

Any other bloggers?

Hi there team! This is Tamara.

I just added my blog (and then Jill's too!) as links on the side here...you can check them out if you want. Mine is pretty new now, but I hope to do more with it in the next few weeks. Jill is a diligents blogger though, so she will have much more interesting stuff to read! I will try to get some pictures up from Zambia 2003 in the next while too! A small trip down memory lane will be great fun for some of us, and will give insight to the rookies for the adventures that are ahead. If you have a blog - add it to the list so we can check it out!

The spring weather is SO refreshing! This morning as soon as I woke up I just HAD to get out in the fresh air. So on went the track pants and runners...you find this is normal for me. I spent a few moments praying for each of you as I walked. I prayed that God prepare each heart before we go, and that He would prepare the people we are to love this summer...I know He will!

Blessings on you today.

To: Zambia Education Team 06
Since we cannot all be together, we have thought of a clever way to get to know each other and a way that we can communicate as one. To start off my name is Alicia Slywka and I live in Regina and am part of the Saskatchewan contingent of the Zambia Education team. Since I'm 19 and know oh so many things about the internet and technology today, I got appointed as the official blog organizer. So here I am. or I should say Here we are. Zambia Education Team 2006.

At our Regina team meeting on April 1st, 2006, we came up with 6 questions that will help us to get to know the people on the team that we either haven't met yet or don't know very well.
So once you read this, click on post a comment and post your answers so that the rest of team can read them and get to know a little bit more about you.

1. Your name? Where are you from?

2. When did you first hear about Africa? (not necessarily this program)

3. Your house is on fire. You can grab ONE thing, what would it be?

4. You purchased an animal. What would it be and what would you name it?

5. You have an extra hour in your day. What would you do with it? (realisticly :) )

6. What is your favourite color?

So there you have it, our first assignment. There will be more to come later.

-Alicia
